It’s best to leave your car at home and rent a pickup truck or, better yet, one with a guide who does the driving. The nearest domestic airports are Comodoro Rivadavia and El Calafate. There are car rental companies in both cities. Ask about public transport options and reliable rental companies at the Centro de Informacion de Estancias de Santa Cruz (see Reservations). We strongly recommend that you not rent a town car. Its small ground clearance exposes it to damages that may put your whole trip at risk. There are three ways to get here: National Route 40 -you will find some pavement under construction-, coming from the north or south; from los Antiguos, along the Andean road that passes Mount Zeballos; or along Chile’s Carretera Austral road, through the Chile Chico-Los Antiguos or Baker-Roballos passes. Driving in a convoy of several cars is safer and more fun than driving alone, and helps you enjoy the trip more. The Turistel guidebooks published in Argentina and Chile, the YPF guidebook and the ACA maps are the most dependable sources of information. |
